Challenge of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) fed diets supplemented with vitamins C and E by Aeromonas hydrophila under different temperature Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Garcia,F.; Moraes,F.R.; Martins,M.L..
Pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus fed diets supplemented with three vitamins C and E levels (zero, 250, and 500mg vitamin/kg diet) were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila under different temperatures. Fish were kept in 300L plastic tanks and fed during the first 60 days with diets without vitamins C and E, in an attempt to reduce vitamin sources. After this period, fish were maintained at an initial density of 14 fish/tank and test diets were offered during 60 days. At the end of the experiment, all fish were infected with 6×10(6)CFU of A. hydrophila/fish, intraperitoneally injected. No interaction of dietary levels of vitamin C vs. E on mortality was observed. Supplementation with vitamins C and E did not decrease the mortality rate of fish challenged with...

Oysters modify the planktonic microbial community structure by their filtration and NH4 excretion activities. While many studies have been conducted on this subject with adult oysters, none had been carried out in situ with juveniles. Pacific oyster juveniles (Magallana gigas, previously Crassostrea gigas) died massively all over the world since 2008 in relation with OsHV-1 infection. During mortality episodes, sick and dead oysters are not separated from healthy live ones, and left to decay in the surrounding environment, with unknown consequences for the nutrient cycle and planktonic microbial components (PMC). The present study aimed to elucidate for the first time the interactions between oyster juveniles and PMC during a mortality episode. Innovative...

Characterization of heat waves affecting mortality rates of broilers between 29 days and market age Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Vale,MM; Moura,DJ; Nääs,IA; Pereira,DF.
Climate may affect broiler production, especially where there are heat waves, which may cause high mortality rates due to the heat stress. Heat wave prediction and characterization may allow early mitigation actions to be taken. Data Mining is one of the tools used for such a characterization, particularly when a large number of variables is involved. The objective of this study was to classify heat waves that promote broiler chicken mortality in poultry houses equipped with minimal environmental control. A single day of heat, a heat-shock day, is capable of producing high broiler mortality. In poultry houses equipped with fans and evaporative cooling, the characterization of heat waves affecting broiler mortality between 29 days of age and market age...

Characterization of Vibrio isolated from Crassostrea gigas spat suffering summer mortality outbreaks ArchiMer
Gay, Melanie; Renault, Tristan; Le Roux, Fredérique.
The French oyster production is mainly based on the pacific oyster, Crassos/rea gigas. However, for several years, C. gigas spat has suffered severe mortality outbreaks. A multifactorial etiology implicating environment, oyster physiology, genetics and pathogens is heavily suspected. A herpesvims and bacteria belonging to the Vihrio s\p/endidus polyphyletic group have been isolated From summer mortality outbreaks. Moreover, several strains belonging to the genus Vibrio have been identified as pathogen for different mollusk species. However, few tools are available for the identification of these Vibrios and for the characterization of the virulence of the pathogenic strains.

Characterization of Vibrio isolated from Crassostrea gigas spat suffering summer mortality outbreaks (slides) ArchiMer
Gay, Melanie; Renault, Tristan; Le Roux, Frédérique.
The pathogens related to summer mortality outbreaks are a herpes virus and two bacterial strains one belonging to Vibrio splendidus biovar II and the other to Vibrio splendidus spp. However, the feature pathogen/opportunist of these strains is still unknown. Several strains belonging to the genus Vibrio have been identified as pathogen for different mollusk species. In the context of the French program Morest, experiments of cohabitation have been used to demonstrate the potential presence of a transmissible infectious agent in batches of oysters suffering from summer mortality outbreaks. More than one hundred Vibrio strains have been isolated from these experiments. These strains have been phenotypically and genotypically characterized. Their virulence...

Climate Change in Layer Poultry Farming: Impact of Heat Waves in Region of Bastos, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Lamarca,DSF; Pereira,DF; Magalhães,MM; Salgado,DD.
ABSTRACT The region around the municipality of Bastos, state of São Paulo, accounted for about 7% of Brazilian egg production in 2015. In 2012, it experienced a heat wave that resulted in the death of approximately 500,000 hens, according to information released at the time. Considering the impact of heat waves on layer mortality, the objective of this study was to analyze how heat waves impact the layer farming in the region of Bastos, considering the climate change scenarios forecasted by the IPCC for the next years. This study was conducted in three stages: i) analysis of the IPCC reports to understand climate change scenarios; ii) analysis of historical temperature data in the region of Bastos; iii) analysis of how climate change, through heat waves,...

Clinical and economic impact of generic versus brand name meropenem use in an intensive care unit in Colombia BJID
Ordóñez,Karen; Feinstein,Max M.; Reyes,Sergio; Hernández-Gómez,Cristhian; Pallares,Christian; Villegas,María V..
Abstract Background: Recent studies suggest that sustained use of generic antibiotics may be associated with clinical failure and emergence of antibacterial resistance. The present study was designed to determine the clinical outcome between the use of generic meropenem (GM) and brand-name meropenem (BNM). Additionally, this study evaluated the economic impact of GM and BNM to determine if the former represents a cost-effective alternative to the latter. Methods: Patients treated between January 2011 and May 2014 received GM while patients treated between June 2014 and March 2017 received BNM. Mortality was compared between groups. Total infection cost was defined by the cost of antimicrobial consumption, length of stay, and laboratory and imaging exams...

Comparación temporal en la estructura de una comunidad coralina en primeros estados de sucesión, Isla de San Andrés, Colombia OceanDocs
Jaramillo-González, J.; Acosta, A..

Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois; Claude, Serge; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Langlade, Aime.
Mussel samples have been placed in plastic-mesh bags hung on wood poles (« bouchots »), at 4 locations of a mussel culture area in the bay of Vilaine (South Brittany, France). They have been monitored for one year, from February 2000 to February 2001. The recorded growth have been rather fast (plus 1.2 g per month between April and September), and mortalities moderate (between 15% to 25%), with better results in southern stations, further from the estuary. Among the physico-chemical parameters recorded, the most striking were very low salinities (below 10 g/l) recorded for days, after heavy rains. They provoqued a valve closure of mussels (recorded by a « valvometer »). Some physiological indicators being tested (muscle force and hermeticity) seemed to...

Comparaison des performances d'élevage et de la vitalité de naissain d'huîtres creuses Crassostrea Gigas, en 3 sites du Morbihan (Rivière d'Auray et Baie de Quiberon), de mai 1999 à mars 2000 ArchiMer
Mazurie, Joseph; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Claude, Serge; Hirata, Toshio; Langlade, Aime; Martin, Anne-genevieve; North, Benjamin.
Summer mortalities of young oysters have been studied in 1999 through the monitoring of a unique oyster batch distributed among 3 sites located from upstream of an estuary (Fort-Espagnol, Auray river) to downstream (Kerpenhir, Auray river) up to open bay (Men er Roué, Bay of Quiberon). Mortality and growth have been monitered in parallel with vitality indices, so as to try or identify periods of weakness of oysters. The spat grew from a mean weight of 3 g, in the beginning of May to around 35 g in November, without sharp differences between sites. The summer mortalities remained moderate (10 %) in the 2 most marine stations, whereas a light peak of mortality (15 %) was recorded in July in the most continental station. Any of the physico-chemical parameters...
